Alcohol and your Symptoms / Health
I absolutely love Christmas.
But I know that for many people it’s a time of year when they find their health often worsens.
The stress, food, and cold weather can all contribute to this, as can drinking a little more alcohol than usual.
That’s why I thought I’d share some tips on minimising the effects that alcohol can have on your health / symptoms…
Sleep
Sleep is one of the most important factors in how you feel each day.
The odd tipple late at night might help you to doze off more quickly, but drinking can affect the quality of your sleep, making you feel tired and sluggish the next day.
Advanced Magnesium is a great supplement that can help with the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Dehydration
Dehydration is a huge side effect of alcohol (and a big cause of hangovers).
Therefore, to stay well hydrated you should drink plenty of water (more than normal) and maybe even some coconut water.
Coconut water not only tastes good but provides your body with electrolytes that are important for maintaining hydration.
Inflammation
Alcohol can be inflammatory and irritate your digestive system.
If you suffer with any digestive or autoimmune / inflammatory issues, this can mean a worsening of symptoms after alcohol.
Mental Health
Alcohol is a depressant, which means it slows down the brain and the central nervous system's processes.
While alcohol may help deal with stress in the short term, it can contribute to feeling of depression and anxiety in the long run.
DHA - one of the omega 3 fats found in Advanced Fish Oil - has been shown to contribute to the maintenance of normal brain function, and can be so important for overall health.
What to Drink?
In terms of the best things to drink, red wine (which contains antioxidants and has been shown to be beneficial in small doses), and/or perhaps a clear spirit such as vodka or gin mixed with soda and lime can normally be best.
Minimising the amount of beer and colourful alcopops you drink normally make sense if you don’t want to feel it in the morning.
Supplements
As well as water and nutritious food, certain supplements will be worth considering…
Advanced Multi provides your body with nutrients that are always valuable, especially at a time like this, including supporting the immune system and a reduction in tiredness and fatigue.
For many people, our Gut Bundle and / or Soothing Bundle are also worth of consideration.
Most of all, whatever you do, have a fantastic time and stay safe, and if you have any questions just get in touch.
