The Spice of Life (and Health)
The importance / wonders of turmeric are being reported more and more in the press of late.
There have been several programmes on TV promoting the health benefits, and numerous newspaper articles of a similar nature, not to mention a huge number of celebrities using it.
We obviously think this is great, not just because we sell a turmeric product but it’s increasing the public awareness of the powers of natural foods.
However, it also means we get a LOT of questions about what its for, and when you should and shouldn’t be using it. So this article aims to help to answer many of those…
Q. Can I take when on medication?
Many of our customers do without issue.
That all said, we have to cover ourselves and put a disclaimer to say check with your doctor if you aren’t sure as we aren’t allowed to advise on medication.
There are some meds where a doctor will likely advise you not to take turmeric…
This includes Warfarin, or when someone has gallstones, in particular.
Q. Is Using Turmeric the same as using Curcumin?
Curcumin is one of the main benefits of using a turmeric supplement.
However, its only one compound, whereas turmeric contains many beneficial compounds that work together.
To isolate just the curcumin from the turmeric is extracting one beneficial compound and leaving behind the rest and is completely unnecessary, providing you get a sufficient dose and quality of turmeric.
It’s like knowing that you need lots of nutrients in your diet and only using vitamin C whilst ignoring the rest!
Therefore, I have always advised that someone uses turmeric as opposed to the single compound curcumin if they want maximum health benefits.
Q. Is just adding turmeric powder to my meals as effective as using the Advanced Turmeric capsules?
There are a few differences in using the capsules to just normal turmeric…
Firstly, our capsules do use turmeric obviously but the turmeric is an extremely pure form which means it is free from some of the toxins and pesticides that can be found in non-organic turmeric.
It’s also mixed with “Bioperine” - a natural black pepper extract which studies have shown improves the absorption and effectiveness by 20 times / 2000% (on its own turmeric isn’t well absorbed into the body).
Taking normal turmeric with food does have some benefit but it wouldn’t be anywhere near as high as our turmeric with the Bioperine.
Also, there's the fact that taking in capsule form is much more convenient.
Most people don’t want to add turmeric to a couple of meals every day (in reality it’s just not going to happen), so the capsules make it very easy to meet the daily requirement for maximum benefit.
How many Advanced Turmeric capsules should you take?
We suggest most people build up to 4 per day, especially if they need them, but start at 1 for a few days, then 2, and so on, only increasing up to 4 assuming you are doing ok with them.
How should it be taken?
We advise that the capsules, if possible (though not essential) should be taken with food (for improved absorption and effectiveness), and if possible spread the dose across the day (so 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon / evening).
Q. Is Advanced Turmeric the same as the Turmeric supplements found in high street stores?
The turmeric supplements they sell in most well-known high street stores are normally significantly different to Advanced Turmeric, in terms of quality, effectiveness and value for money.
Firstly, ours contains 500mg per capsule whereas normally, most others are 400mg.
Sometimes brands will deliberately mislabel their product, and make crazy claims, saying its the equivalent of 10,000mg per capsule, but that's just not possible as the capsule would be huge.
Secondly, we use an extremely pure turmeric which means it is free from some of the toxins and pesticides that can be found in most other turmeric products (and which can certainly cause numerous health issues).
Advanced Turmeric is also mixed with "Bioperine" - a natural black pepper extract which studies have shown improves the absorption and effectiveness by 20 times (on its own turmeric isn't well absorbed into the body).
"Bioperine" is vastly superior to just mixing turmeric with black pepper. The effects taking with normal black pepper are actually very limited. It takes time for the beneficial properties of normal black pepper to be extracted by the body. To help absorption of the turmeric, the piperine/Bioperine (the beneficial element in black pepper) needs to be instantly available to the body - at the same time the turmeric is consumed. That just doesn’t happen with normal black pepper meaning the turmeric passes through the system without being absorbed. What’s more, even if it did work and was instantly available, you'd need to take quite a lot of black pepper for it to be effective. Studies have shown that it’s the Bioperine specifically that improves absorption of the turmeric by 20 times.
Taking normal turmeric may have some mild benefit if taken with food, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as high as our Advanced Turmeric provides, and may potentially cause issues if you reacted to any of the toxins in the non-organic turmeric. What's more, you would need to take a LOT (an unrealistic amount, at least 20 times the dose of Advanced Turmeric) for it to be as effective because it doesn't contain the Bioperine and so isn't absorbed well at all.
Finally, Advanced Turmeric is manufactured in the UK to the highest possibly quality standards and safety checks.
Of course, we're biased, but we consider Advanced Turmeric to be vastly superior to almost all other turmeric supplements.
Q. Can I give it to my dog?
We certainly have customers who do and report great results.
However, we advise you check with your vet first if you wish as we don't want to pretend to be experts in animal health.
Q. Is Advanced Turmeric all I need to feel completely better?
Very likely not.
Firstly, we never want to pretend it can cure or treat any condition.
Secondly, supplements are supplemental to everything else - we never want to pretend they are the ONLY thing needed. Diet, stress, infections, bacteria, toxins, leaky gut, bacteria, yeast, history, etc all can play apart, and all need to be worked on too, as well as just using supplements.
Finally, we offer a range of products that can work very well alongside the turmeric. These can be complementary to each other and allow for vastly improved results.
