The problem with “gluten free”
Have you ever been told that, for better health, you should have a gluten free diet?
In reality, there is no one perfect diet for anyone but removing gluten can certainly sometimes be beneficial.
When someone decides to cut gluten out of their diet, often they will replace gluten containing foods with those labelled as “gluten free”, but this can be a bad idea that leads to numerous problems.
There’s no doubt that, for some people, “gluten free” foods have dramatically improved their health.
But that won’t apply to everyone.
Here’s a few reasons why…
#1. Nutrients
Just because something is “gluten free”, certainly doesn’t mean it’s healthy or nourishing.
When producing certain “gluten free” foods (i.e. foods that normally have gluten but now don’t, such as gluten free bread), a large amount of processing occurs which can destroy the majority of the nutrients within the ingredients.
This means that the food you are eating will be lacking in vitamins and minerals, and failing to nourish you properly.
Over time this will affect your health and lead to numerous vitamin deficiencies.
#2. Gluten
There’s also the (quite frankly, scary) prospect that “gluten free” foods can contain…gluten.
You see, foods that are certified as gluten free can contain up to 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten per serving.
In reality, this is a very small amount but if you are consuming a lot of these foods, on a regular basis, then over time you can be exposing yourself to larger amounts of gluten.
If you are particularly sensitive to gluten (as many people are, especially when their gut health isn’t in a good place) then this will likely cause problems.
#3. Ingredients
When companies remove gluten from food, they inevitably have to replace it with something else.
This will often be a number of different things, many of which are hard to even pronounce.
In fact, I’d suggest looking at the list of ingredients in the “gluten free” aisle next time you are in the supermarket.
It can be quite a list!
Quite often, sugar will be one of these ingredients, and excess sugar can lead to numerous other problems and symptoms.
Additionally, there will be large amount of preservatives added (which can harm you in many ways but, in particular, your body will find hard to digest) and many refined oils (which can certainly add to your inflammation levels).
Hopefully you can see that just relying on “gluten free” food could be a big problem, and getting a more appropriate diet (plus other advice on lifestyle and testing) can be very beneficial health.
