Takeaway Food and Chronic Health
Most Saturday nights, Donna and myself will get a takeaway.
We’re particularly fond of Turkish lately (I don’t know if your town is the same but where we live it seems that every other restaurant is a Turkish these days?!).
Thai is another favourite of ours, as well as the occasional Indian.
If you go for the right thing, they are generally nowhere near as unhealthy as a lot of people might imagine…
That said, other commonly used takeaways (Chinese, McDonalds, Pizzas) generally aren’t our thing as neither of us feel particularly great after eating them.
It’s not like they cause huge problems, but there might be a bit of bloating, a stuffed feeling, more lethargic, etc.
There are some people out there who will tell you that as long as you eat the right number of calories for your body then that’s all that matters.
The calories in a Chinese / McDonalds / Pizza are likely broadly similar to the calories in an Indian / Thai / Turkish.
But how they leave you feeling can be vastly different.
In fact, a major part of the most popular diets are based on the false premise that all calories are equal and sometimes even restrict some very healthy foods because they are high in calories.
Very rarely is the nutritional value and quality of the food taken into account.
Even things like Coke Zero (which somehow contains zero calories) won’t leave you feeling as good after as a glass of water would.
I certainly don’t eat a perfect diet but I do also want to feel good after eating and so naturally choose foods that help me to do that.
It’s not just about calories, no matter what all the popular diets would make you think (especially for someone with a chronic health issue).
Its why, at the Autoimmune Institute, quality REALLY matters to us.
For example, we don’t just sell any fish oil (like those you can get on the high street).
Most fish oils come from farmed fish, that contain toxins and heavy metals, and are very low in the beneficial omega 3 fats.
Advanced Fish Oil contains very high levels of omega 3 beneficial fats (in the most beneficial form of EPA and DHA), comes from wild fish, and is independently tested to confirm that it is free of toxins and metals as such as mercury.
The difference in quality versus what you can normally buy is huge and you’ll feel much better as a result when taking it.
The same can be said for all of our products really – our magnesium, our multivitamin, and our turmeric in particular.
It might be the same calories and have a similar name to something you’d get in on the high street.
But the effects on your health will be VERY different.
It’s like comparing a Michelin starred meal cooked from scratch, against a cheap nasty greasy takeaway.
It tastes better, is better for you, and leaves you feeling fantastic.
Win win win.
