There’s some things in life that are really similar but at the same time one is much better.
Take popcorn for example…
You can get it in either sweet or salted.
But if you ask me sweet tastes SOOOO much better.
How about Ant or Dec?
Definitely Dec for me!
Finally, Dark Chocolate or Milk Chocolate?
Well, whatever you prefer taste wise, dark definitely wins in the health stakes.
Dark Chocolate is something that I find myself using in a lot of my healthy dessert recipes (remind me to share my healthy snickers recipe with you some day).
This is for a few reasons…
Firstly, dark chocolate is packed full of antioxidants.
Among other things, this can help to reduce the signs of ageing, and fight the toxins (that can worsen your symptoms) that we are exposed to each day.
It’s also been shown it can help to lower your blood pressure and prevent hardening of the arteries.
What’s more its helps to increase blood flow to the brain and so may reduce your risk of stroke.
Dark Chocolate contains the same chemical that your brain creates when you feel like you're falling in love.
This basically means that when you eat it, it will make you feel happier and improve your mood.
I can go on…..
It’s high in vitamins and minerals…
And Swiss scientists have found that when very anxious people ate some dark chocolate every day for two weeks, their stress hormone levels were reduced significantly.
Last but by no means least, if you get the right one it will be low in sugar and free of dairy (both of which can cause issues for people with chronic health problems).
So hopefully you can see that eating dark chocolate is not only very enjoyable, it’s also REALLY good for you.
I do appreciate that some people don’t like the taste of it but in reality that’s normally because it is such a contrast to normal, sugary milk chocolate.
It is less sweet and that can take some getting used to but I wouldn’t give up at the first try as very quickly your taste buds can adjust.
I generally go for 85%-90% dark chocolate but if you aren’t used to it, you might want to start at something like 70% and gradually work your way upwards.
It's definitely a really useful go to food for controlling sweet cravings.
If you do find that you often crave sweet food then dark choc can really help but it’s also worth considering how much good quality fat you have in your diet (low fat intake is a very common cause of poor energy and bad sugar cravings).
Pretty much the most important fat that you can eat is Omega 3 fats which amongst other things help to support brain, heart and eye health.
