Have Your Heard of Scurvy?
Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?...
They are all VERY common in many of our customers when they come to us.
However, they are actually also the symptoms listed for Scurvy.
Scurvy is something that people often suffered with many years ago.
And it is ultimately caused by a vitamin C deficiency.
Because of this, it mainly affected people who were away at sea for long periods of time because they wouldn’t have access to the nutrients needed to prevent it.
In more modern times it has been pretty rare, but there have been several cases of it reported in Australia relatively recently.
In the UK alone, there were a total of 16 million hospital admissions by the end of 2018 relating to scurvy cases. If you’re going to analyse the data, there’s definitely an apparent increase of people affected by scurvy, and health specialists worry that it’s making a ‘comeback’ in the UK.
Because scurvy symptoms are all ultimately caused by a vitamin C deficiency, if you suffer with any of them at all you should consider if you are getting enough (good quality, absorbable) vitamin C in your diet.
Vitamin C is so important because it is needed to make collagen (which is found in many different types of tissue such as skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage). Without vitamin C, collagen can't be replaced and the different types of tissue break down, leading to the above symptoms.
Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that helps in lessening the damage from inflammation and oxidative stress. According to researchers, people who don’t have vitamin C deficiency are able to fight off infections better than those who have scurvy.
So the fact that all of these symptoms (and cases of scurvy itself) are becoming more and more common can be a sign that people these days just aren’t able to get the nutrients they need from their diet.
That in large part will be because people aren’t eating the right things (the doctors and dieticians generally don’t seem to be able to give the correct advice).
However, it can be because the foods we eat just aren’t as nutritious these days as they once used to be. Plus the fact that these days, it’s quite hard to follow a strict and healthy diet that ensures your body full and integrated nutrition, as it may get quite expensive.
Additionally, farming methods (such as the use of pesticides and preservatives) destroy the nutrients in our foods and means that we just don’t have as easy access to good nutritious food as we once did.
These issues made it difficult to get the needed nutrients our body needs which ultimately leads to health concerns like scurvy.
That is why other than vitamin C, multivitamins are one of the appropriate methods to get your daily dose of nutrients.
These are the reasons why something such as “Advanced Vitality” (which is very high in vitamin C in its most natural form) and our Multivitamin can be so beneficial.
