What frustrates me is that doctors often refuse to even acknowledge it! Time and time again I hear people brush this off as they are working too hard, or it’s their age.
Trust me, it’s not your age – you can still feel energetic as you grow older!
But it does almost always start in the gut.
Here’s 4 reasons why problems in the gut would cause fatigue…
What many people don’t realise is that 80% of your immune system is located in and around your gut.
Without your gut being in a healthy place, you simply won’t have a healthy immune system.
And an unhealthy immune system will lead to a LOT of problems.
In particular you will be exposed to more and more infections, because your body is less able to fight them off, and this can leave you extremely run down, leading to low energy.

When the lining of the gut is damaged this can lead to what’s known as intestinal permeability (also commonly referred to as “leaky gut”).

When someone is suffering with symptoms the doctor will almost always recommend medication.
And quite simply, the common side effects from some of this medication is fatigue.
I’m obviously NOT saying that medication isn’t needed but I have heard several stories of people who actually feel better and more energetic when they aren’t taking the drugs (that doesn’t apply to everyone so please don’t confuse this with me suggesting you should just stop taking your meds!).
What’s more, medication isn't necessarily addressing the cause of the symptoms which means that the underlying problem still exist, which can place a huge strain on your body.
There’s basically a constant battle going on between the underlying issues and the medication.
This constant strain can ultimately lead to fatigue – it’s the body’s way of saying it can’t cope any more.
The constant stress and strain will severely impact your hormone levels too.
For example, your cortisol, testosterone, oestrogen and DHEA (all important hormones for feelings of well-being, energy and libido) will be affected by your underlying problems and the medication you may be on.
Now there are other causes of fatigue more simplistic than the above (things such as not eating enough, not drinking enough water, not sleeping enough, and so on) but fixing the gut is certainly a critical step.
