Then you’ve got something in common with Dorothy. Here’s her journey:
After 5 years feeling betrayed by my own joints, I found something that changed everything for me. It felt like a duty to share it here and maybe help those who are going through similar battles.
The first time it happened, my husband cradled me in his arms like a baby. And I was bawling my eyes out.
“I’m a mess,” I cried into his chest.
“I’m like a 48 year old woman turning 88! Why is this happening to me?”
I couldn’t accept it. It wasn’t fair that my joints were falling apart, while my husband (who’s 5 years older) was at the peak of his health.
I knew it was going to be a good day or a bad day for me.
That’s why, when I first started taking more rest from work and reducing carbs, I was excited to go to sleep.
Maybe this time, I’ll wake up and it’s gone. Maybe I’ve done the exact right thing to keep my joint aches in check.
But usually, my hope was dashed even before my eyes fully adjusted to the morning light. Because I could already feel my joints being locked in place. And I would need another 1-2 hours before I could even sit up.
While I move my body bit-by-bit, like a rusty old robot needing to be oiled… Endless questions and frustration filled my mind. “What am I doing wrong? Why can’t the doctor give me a diagnosis? Why isn’t anything working?”
In the beginning, it was nothing. Benign. A little stiff in the knuckles and wrists. Nothing a little stretching wouldn’t help.
That was way before I had my first episode of being “locked” in bed.
So I dismissed my creaky knuckles with a wave. Didn’t even tell my husband about it. Why worry him with something so small?
Gradually, it got a little worse and worse. Clenching and spreading my fingers were almost impossible in the morning.
Over time, the house was filled with stuff that I used to just to get my joints going in the morning…
The problem was, the stiffness wasn’t just bound around my hands anymore. It was spreading to my other joints. My shoulders, ankles and knees were growing stiffer day by day.
And some days were worse than others. When the pain was almost unbearable. But I pushed through. I thought I was strong...
Then it happened!
One day, my wrist hurt like someone was stabbing knives into my joints. I could barely grip the kettle to brew myself a tea! My hands were shaking and I almost spilled hot boiling water all over myself.
Thank goodness my husband caught it in time!
He told me that he noticed that I was fussing with my hands a lot and urged me to go see my GP. He was right, I should have probably gone to see one earlier. But I was in denial.
So to the GP I went. He took X-rays of my joints and did a nerve conduction study that showed negative results. Even my blood test came back clear. He looked at me like I was a puzzle he couldn’t complete and said it’s probably just a sign of ageing.
He told me to just ease up on my joints and rest up more. Maybe I am pushing myself too much at my age.
I couldn’t believe it.
I wasn’t an old crone! I still got my whole life ahead of me and he talked to me like I was about to kick the bucket at any moment.
I didn’t give up. I went to see other doctors and specialists.
When I had an MRI that showed bone spurs and a bump and I thought that was it. A sign, pointing to something! But it was false alarms, the doctor shook his head. The test still wasn’t conclusive enough.
For many months I was being passed around from one specialist to the next, and they all came out of the lab scratching their heads. “Sorry, we don’t know what’s wrong with you.”
With the stress that came from frustration, my symptoms progressed to worse still. Funny how trying to find the answer to my sickness was making me sicker.
My stiffness was locking the joints of my whole body in place almost every morning. And it was painful to move. In the morning I walked with a limp and moved like the undead. All stiff and bent at weird angles.
I decided the diagnosis could wait.
I just wanted something that could alleviate the pain. So I went to another doctor and was prescribed NSAIDs.
To tell the truth, the NSAIDs did seem to be working at first. I could finally function like normal in the morning. The stabbing pain in my joints were soothed and I was over the moon.
My husband was happy for me and it seemed like our home life would go back to normal.
I was beginning to think that I could live well with my unknown condition.
Then not a few weeks later, something I didn’t see coming happened. ---
After lunch at work, I took my meds like usual. And not 15 minutes after that my stomach began rumbling and boiling. I could feel acid burning up my throat and the sour taste of bile in my mouth. Before I was hit with the worst stomach cramps of my life, doubling me over at the office.
Was something wrong with my lunch?
Turns out the painkillers I was taking were eating away at my digestive system. It’s not something that I could take in the long-term safely.
In fact, it wasn’t even healing my pain, it was just masking the pain. It was giving me more health issues to deal with. After that, I was bedridden for days from joint pains and stomach problems.
All my hopes to live a “normal” life again shattered.
It felt like “life” was giving me an ultimatum. “Either you suffer from joint pain or from the worst indigestion in your life. Choose!”
I chose to save my stomach and stopped taking NSAIDs.
Then I had to make another painful decision, I had to apply for early retirement.
In those days I had to get up earlier and earlier so that I had time to warm up my joints before work.
It was taking longer as my flare ups got worse. Because I’d wake up with red joints that were swollen, painful and stiff. Bending and straightening in these mornings felt like I was crushing glass between my cartilages.
To make matters worse, I was being woken up at night from the pain in my joints. And then had to wake up early just to make sure they were flexible by the time I needed to get to work.
I was fatigued, in pain and moody. My work performance suffered and my heart wasn’t in it anymore. So I quit my job.
It felt like my joint pain was taking over my life.
But my spirit wasn’t completely crushed. Now that I had more time for myself, I had more time to explore other solutions.
I tried all the alternative solutions that I could find. Acupuncture, massages, homeopathy and traditional healing methods. Nothing proved to be working for more than a few hours.
I even went travelling with great effort all over the world, and was given endless herbs and concoction by alternative medical practitioners, but nothing ever really gave me real lasting relief.
I’d come back home, tired, aching and crushed. For months and months I poured so much effort and money to find and try all of these treatments. I thought I might as well had burned the cash for all the good it did me.
It was during this frantic search that I discovered Keto diet. I was blown away by the promises.
A diet that is not only supposed to help you reduce inflammation and chronic pain, but also lose weight? I thought, “Sign me up!”
I got on board with the diet, and at first it did seem to work. I took no sugar, alcohol, grains, dairy or anything sweet at all for a month. Instead I took meat, eggs, fruits and natural fats like nuts and avocado every day.
And I was starting to become hopeful again.
Maybe even going on adventurous trips, hiking, climbing mountains, or cycling in the countryside.
Unfortunately, it was a false positive. After one month with the Keto diet programme, I got a huge backlash from my joints.
I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like my whole body was throbbing in pain. My joints looked angry red and I was in so much pain. I couldn’t move and couldn’t do anything except to call out for my husband. He held me gently as I cried and cried.
Everybody’s bodies are different. Sometimes a solution that worked for someone else might not work for you. So even though I heard good things about Keto from my friends and family, it wasn’t the right solution for me.
Apparently doing Keto caused an increase in cholesterol for me. It also triggered my body’s natural inflammatory response and was hard on my joints.
After I stopped Keto, my condition was no worse and no less than when I started.
I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I had been neglecting my friends, I was out of touch with my grown up kids and I was all wrapped up in worry about my joint condition.
I felt like I was in a long-winded hidden camera reality show, where I was the butt of the joke.
I want someone to come up to me and say “just kidding!” and hand me my joint health, money and time back.
It felt like I had truly hit rock bottom. I couldn’t sink any lower in spirit and energy.
My husband encouraged me to take things slower and be kinder to myself. He reminded me that I still had people that cared for me.
So I decided to call my mother and just reconnect. Unexpectedly, in the midst of our conversation, she mentioned that her uncle had lupus. A condition where his immune system attacked the healthy cells in his body. Which was also very hard to diagnose and treat.
It hit me like a slap to the face. Wake up, you’re not at the end of your search yet! Could this be it?
I thought “OK, let’s have another go at it.”
So I went to see for a diagnosis. Again. With this new information in my medical history, the doctor finally had a final piece in the puzzle to diagnose me.
It was frustrating to finally get a diagnosis, and still not being able to have one clear and simple treatment.
Even the doctors couldn’t agree on the best course of treatment for my condition.
And after my bad experience with NSAIDs, I couldn’t completely trust in solutions that are not natural anymore. “What side effects would this have? Would it give me more problems down the road?”
At this point, I had met countless doctors, tried countless meds, and alternative products… None of them gave me answers.
I decided the answer will have to come down to me.
For 5 years I had searched and searched and nothing worked! I spent so much time, money, energy and mental space just to fix one issue in my life.
I felt like I was at the end of my wits.
But I couldn’t stop now… I hit the books and the Internet.
I dug for the root causes of inflammation and autoimmune conditions, specifically RA.
And I found out a few surprising things. Treating RA has nothing to do with resting more or giving a break to your joints.
What rest does is cause the muscles that support your joint to weaken. It can heighten fatigue, stiffness and pain and make the symptoms worse.
You have to fight through the pain, and warm up your joints with movements to reduce the damage from the inflammation.
This is very different from what is advised for osteoarthritis.
This discovery blew me away. Many times when I was in pain, I thought I needed to rest up my joints. No wonder my flare ups only became worse and worse
Realising that there’s so much more to learn, I went deeper and deeper into recent research, scientific books and health expert consultations.
Not long after that, I started experimenting with my own homemade remedies.
I discovered a powerful anti-inflammatory ayurvedic spice that helped a lot of people overcome their pain.
The thing is, I had it in my cupboard all along.
The spice is… turmeric!
I mixed it into a drink and drank the strong-smelling concoction while pinching my nose.
I did this for a few weeks. And my husband noted that I seem to be more flexible lately.
Still, I wasn’t too encouraged. The improvement was very slight.
When I dug deeper, I realised that it had to be taken with black pepper extract. This ingredient can increase the efficiency of turmeric’s active ingredient (curcumin) by 20X!
But when I mixed these ingredients into a drink, I could barely choke it down.
The day after I tried this, I did feel better, but it could just be a coincidence.
I thought I needed to take this in a form where I don’t have to deal with the smell or the taste of the ingredients.
That’s when I looked in earnest for just the right product that provides the same or better all-natural formula than what I had discovered for myself.
I tried many different brands of turmeric products before I found the one that’s right for me.
It contains the highest grade pure turmeric that can be found in the market today and patented black pepper extract called Bioperine. The best thing for me is, it is in an easy-to-swallow capsule form that’s free from any smell or taste.
Unlike other turmeric products, this turmeric supplement also contains Vitamin C that further helps you to boost the efficacy of the turmeric.
After trying this for 2 months, I felt like I had finally found my holy grail of RA supplement.
My flare ups have become few and far between. And even when I do have a flare up, I could sit up and walk out from the bed in just 10 minutes flat. Which is such a huge difference from the 1-2 hours that I needed before I started taking this product!
After years and years of search, I felt like I have found my answer.
What I absolutely love is that I can take this product in the long term and it’s completely safe. It has no side effects that painkillers have and much gentler on my tummy.
And that’s my story and that’s why I NEEDED to share this with you.
I wish no one would suffer for so many years as I did without the right support. If you’re looking for something to support your RA, you’re in luck.
Because this one actually works!
