"I'm tired of meds and pain relievers that cause side effects, but without them my joint pain is 5x worse... what should I do?" - Debbie
Let me rewind back to the beginning...
A few years ago, I retired from my working life. So I was looking forward to spending more time with my family and doing what I loved - home improvement projects.
Unfortunately, that’s when I started to experience joint pain in my fingers and toes.
At first it was not so bad. Just a little stiff and achy. So I brushed it off.
But not too long after that, it got worse. If I walked too much, my feet would swell the next day. Going up and down stairs was hard on my joints. And I had to hold on to the railing for dear life because my knees were so stiff.
I even started using a cane, and was considering a “walker”.
So yes, my retirement wasn’t at all going like I imagined it would. I could barely walk, much less go on hiking trips or even just drive to visit my kids.
My life would never be the same again I thought.
My GP advised me to see a rheumatologist. But in the meantime I was given some meds and painkillers that were supposed to help me manage the pain. The problem was, even with the painkillers my condition got worse.
They were helping with the pain, but not my rusty, creaky joints. The stiffness and swelling got so much worse that I could barely walk. At night, I’d be woken up with random joint aches.
I couldn't sleep well and was having what I now call "painsomnia"
That’s when I went to see my joint specialist and got started on meds.
Which really helped at first.
But just when I thought things were looking up…
I realised that the meds actually came with all sorts of side effects.
And my joints didn't even improve all that much. And after a while the meds just sort of lost their “magic”.
I started waking up with the worst joint pain I've ever experienced so far. Even on the meds. My joints were barely bending in the morning. I had shooting pain in my shoulders and hips that made it hard to move. I needed to move only bit-by-bit and had to shuffle to the loo.
Even the cane is useless now as I could barely get my fingers to work in the morning. I needed my husband's help, just to sit up in bed.
Hearing this, the doctor got me off the meds. And I was left with my joint pain and the meds’ awful side effects. Bloating, digestive issues, skin rashes…
This happened a few times with different meds until the Rheumatologist put me on a strict elimination diet.
I was hopeful at first. Surely this could work, right?
But though I could really see my mobility improving when I was following the diet more closely....
I was still nowhere close to being able to walk without help.
And just when I thought things couldn’t get worse… I started waking up with the worst joint pain ever. And doing easy chores like laundry, cooking and cleaning became impossible.
When I told the doctor that the new diet was not working, he put me on steroids.
I felt like a ping pong ball, bouncing from one treatment to the next. But I agreed to it. I was desperate to get better.
And at first, the steroid was like a miracle. I felt like myself again. I could drive, go out and get groceries by myself. My mobility returned.
But the doctor forgot to mention one crucial detail about the steroid meds.
I could grow dependent on it. And there were (of course!) side effects.
So long story short, I gained 18kg even on my vegan diet.
And my body ballooned into a ball. My face looked like the moon, I had no neck and was growing hair on my chin.
I was also having a lot of terrible mood swings and brain fog.
Plus, my blood sugar was shooting through the roof because of it.
I was overweight (which put more stress on my joints), full of anxious feelings and was dependent on my steroids meds.
Which after some reading, I realised had some really awful long-term side effects that I wasn't prepared for. Like bone loss and increased blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
I was devastated.
Now I was also easily tired out. Especially as I was carrying a much heavier body.
I stopped being mindful of what I ate and went on a downward spiral.
I put too much hope in the meds
And was too excited when something worked that I forgot to pay attention to my body and what's really going on there.
I blinded myself to the fact the drugs were not really good for me, and instead were just enjoying the fact that I could walk, go out and drive again.
And that’s when my my doctor announced that I may need to consider joint replacement surgery for my hips.
I couldn’t believe my options were limited to surgery. An invasive procedure I was not ready for.
Searching for something that worked felt like a neverending search.
I felt devastated that the drugs that "were" working for me had so many side effects.
But also crushed that I needed to choose to give it up. And what if this also didn’t work?
I felt fatigue, worried and depressed.
When I finally started to get off the steroids, my symptoms came back tenfold.
I was waking up more days completely debilitated. I didn't feel like doing anything. I felt like I was a useless lump around the house and a burden to my husband.
I was letting go of myself. My relationship. And the house.
It seemed like the rest of my life was going to revolve around the disease and it really hit me hard.
I was an old 50 year old retiree who had no hopes of ever recovering from her disease.
My mobility got a lot worse than before I even started with the treatments. I was bedridden most days and could barely walk.
In fact, even the business was suffering because my husband was spending most of his time taking care of me. I disliked my body and myself a lot at this time.
Then something happened that knocked some sense back into me…
One day, my kids visited me with my 2 twin grandkids.
Coincidentally, my joints were flaring up that day. The joints in my whole body were inflamed and felt hot like they had the flu.
So I just sat around them and watched them play.
It broke my heart!
And I immediately cried as I realised one thing…
The kids couldn't really understand my sickness and they thought I was ignoring them. I explained my condition to them as best as I could.
If I want to be there for my family and grandkids, I need to do my best to overcome this sickness.
So when they left, I decided I needed to take my situation into my own hands.
I decided to try alternative treatments to manage my joint pain.
-- This decision changed my life’s trajectory. --
I wanted more than “dealing” with my RA.
I wanted to be a part of my grandchildren's lives.
I wanted to do better by my family and friends.
And I want to feel like I was a good wife, mother, grandmother and friend again.
I wanted to do things I enjoy again. And I still had my whole life ahead of me and I needed to give it my best.
Although I was someone who believed in western and pharma meds...At one point I had to really look at the results that these have had on my body so far. And it wasn't looking too good.
This is what happened next…
I kept an open mind and tried every alternative treatment and medicine out there. I tried massages, cupping, acupuncture, various herbs and more. Most of it didn't make a difference.
I delved deeper into support groups, researches and recent studies on root causes of joint pain. I pushed through the pain and worked hard at doing my own research.
One thing that kept popping up in my research was this ayurvedic herb.
It had been in use in India for thousands of years. And was starting to become famous in the West. It was said to be a natural anti-inflammatory and I met countless people in my support group who swore by it.
So I started researching the best turmeric supplements out there.
I tried them for at least 1-2 months before reviewing if there were any improvements in my condition. I went through oh-so-many bottles and brands of Turmeric out there.
Before I found one that was promising.
I needed less and less warm-up to get my joints going in the morning and had less serious flare-ups in the first month.
So I continued using it for the next month. And I couldn't believe it! I needed my cane and walker much less than I did.
The morning swelling in my joints went down and my joints weren't as stiff.
I started to feel comfortable doing my chores around the house.
Even my husband commented on how active I was and that I look a lot happier lately.
That's when I realised that, I "was" feeling a lot better.
I was just too scared to admit to myself how much better I was feeling after being disappointed so many times.
I was regaining my joint health and my strength.
My morning flare up was reduced by a lot. It helped soothe my joint pain, oil my joints and increased my mobility.
Even my energy was up!
By then I had enough knowledge to know that I needed exercise more than people without RA.
So with this boosted energy, I exercised more. Which improved my mood and outlook in life as well.
Finally I felt like I was on the right path again.
I was not the same woman that started on this journey…
I could join my husband for long morning walks which I never took for granted again. I could play with my grandkids again and we're closer than ever.
I started to challenge myself more at home. Not just with chores but with projects. Like repainting our living room, planning family gatherings and going on hiking jaunts with my friends.
I became more confident and happier.
And after going through what I went through… I couldn’t stop there.
I needed to share with others how I have overcome this disease.
It is not an easy journey, and having more resources and information to help is so important.
And that there's a way out of the dark tunnel of my joint diagnosis.
Right now, the turmeric supplement that I take contains BioPerine.
It is a patented black pepper extract that can increase absorption by 20x.
I also know that it is made from pure, high quality turmeric.
I take 2 caps in the morning and night with my meals.
So don't give up after the first month or two.
This stuff needs time to work into your system.
It has no side effects like all the other meds or painkillers for me.
So to me, I've found the best all-natural solution from mother nature.
This product that I am using is called Advanced Turmeric.
Now joint pain and stiffness don't bother me as much as they used to.
I used to feel small and powerless, but now I feel like anything is possible for me.
I get to do what I dreamed of doing, all from my own efforts.
I get to live the life I want and be an example to others.
I can teach them how they can find alternative support for joint pain.
Without going through invasive procedures like injections or surgeries.
Not that there’s anything wrong with this, but if you’re not ready for it like me…
This is a life-changing alternative.
After going through what I did, I feel like anything is possible.
There's nothing like overcoming a debilitating illness to make one appreciate life more.
I can't complain about where I am now, because I have made the best of it.
I think my experience proves that no matter how bad things get, you have to keep pushing. There's always something you can do to improve your situation.
And you can decide today that you're not going to let anything stand in your way.
If you don't, you might never know that you can overcome your worst and darkest moments. And come out the other side, better than ever.
Love,
